Why did I build AmputatorBot?

Why did I build AmputatorBot?
AmputatorBot.com | Remove AMP from URLs in just one click! - More info
Open-sourced on GitHub - More info
Summon AmputatorBot by mentioning it like this: u/AmputatorBot

Why AMP is a threat to the Open Web

What is AMP?
AMP is an open-source web component framework developed by the AMP Open Source Project, first announced by Google in 2015 as a reaction to Facebook’s Instant Articles and Apple News. While it was originally aimed at accelerating mobile pages (hence AMP), it’s now a much broader project aimed at improving the UX of websites, stories, ads and mail. The AMP framework consists of three components: AMP HTML, which is standard HTML markup with web components; AMP JavaScript, which manages resource loading; and AMP caches, which serves and validates AMP pages.
In plain English: AMP is Google’s attempt at making pages (and more) faster. They did a good job, pages built with the AMP framework will normally load faster. But as this article explains, you won’t notice much of a difference unless if the AMP library is served using the AMP cache, more on that later.
The controversies with cached AMP pages
The AMP format is itself not much of a problem. In fact, we should applaud search engines that give ranking preference to fast-loading pages like AMP, but four aspects of its implementation are flawed:
  1. Google mobile Search’s Top Stories carousel has a premium position above of all other results, which is only accessible for AMP pages. These pages have to use a mostly Google-controlled technology (of the top 10 contributors to the AMP project on GitHub, 9 are Google employees), are then served by Google from their infrastructure, commonly on a Google URL, and placed within a Google controlled user experience. And since this carousel generates a lot of clicks and revenue, publishers are left no choice but to embrace AMP. This has the effect of further reinforcing Google’s dominance of the Web. Fortunately, Google has announced that it's working on opening up the Top Stories carousel to non-AMP pages in 2021.
  2. The biggest performance boost doesn’t come from the AMP framework, but from preloading the page. It begs the question: Should preloading really be exclusive to AMP? They could introduce a way for publishers to allow or disallow preloading and if Google sees fit, they could preload those pages too, alongside AMP.
  3. When a user navigates from Google to a piece of content Google has recommended, they are, unwittingly, remaining within Google’s ecosystem and the publisher’s domain is obscured by the google.com/amp prefix.
  4. Google’s entire business model is about collecting as much personal data as possible, AMP is just another tool to do so. As described in Google’s Support article:
“When you use the Google AMP Viewer, Google and the publisher that made the AMP page may each collect data about you.”
The controversies with non-cached AMP pages
To be clear, the above flaws are only with AMP pages cached by Google (or another party like Bing or Cloudflare) but there are also plenty of pages simply utilizing the AMP framework, recognized by URLs such as bbc.com/news/amp/. However, these are also problematic, mainly because there's only a small performance improvement when AMP pages aren't cached and AMP pages tend to be less feature-rich and less diverse than their originals. And in some edge cases, it breaks stuff.
One could argue that the more popular the AMP framework becomes, the more AMP threatens the open web. That said, it should be clear that the biggest problem lies with the cached AMP pages.
AMP is open source, but that doesn't make it holy. Or as Ferdy Christant puts it quite nicely in his blog:
Google’s main defense is that AMP is open source. Which isn’t just a weak defense, it’s no defense at all. I can open source a plan for genocide. The term “open source” is meaningless if the thing that is open source is harmful.
Just so we’re clear, I’m not claiming Google or the AMP project is evil (hell, they might even have good intentions!), but the fact is that AMP and it's implementation have some major flaws that threaten the Open Web. And as long as that's the case, AmputatorBot will be there to remove AMP from your URLs.

[Updated Jan 2020] How many Irish Subs are there really?

The first time I made this post I had uncovered 500+ Irish related subs on reddit, from the abandoned to the large. This was some time in 2016ish and I have continued to try and track as many new subs as I can.
Below is the updated list, again including some of the Discord Servers & useful other external links (although not counted) and the count stands at 710 plus some redirects/banned subs/karma farms. I have also continued to included some of the North American Subs that could be mistaken for Irish just for information.
As you can see from the notations many, many of them are inactive but it's more about finding as many of them as possible than anything else.
If anyone knows of, or can find, new ones not listed below, throw them in the comments and I'll add them to the list. A rich vein of new ones continue to be towns etc, people from Ireland (bands etc) and products.
To any owners of Discords that appear on this list or not, let me know of perma invitation links as I know some of the below have expired but I'd rather have them as reminders/ place holders than not.
Notes:
To anyone who owns a sub...put a description in the bleedin' sidebar! (Growing is easier if people don't have to guess what the sub is for)
If you find a sub you might like to resurrect you can head over the /redditrequest and request to take it over. See their sidebar for full rules and process.

The BIG boys are actually BAD boys feat. Rave + Psiphon

This subreddit has discussed Psiphon's questionable behavior recently, but here is my ELI5 recap (Part 1, Part 2) along with my breakdown of how Psiphon is breaking multiple rules. Luckily, they do not appear to be a part of the KRE, so we dont need to worry about them anymore.

Now it appears Rave is engaging in highly questionable behavior and i'll lay it why I believe they are below

1/4/2020 11:43 AM, Rave gives an account 2 Kin
1/4/2020 11:43 AM, Rave gives an account 998 Kin
1/4/2020 11:43 AM, User spends 1000 Kin to join a rave
1/4/2020 12:01pm, Rave gives an account 7 Kin
1/4/2020 12:01pm, Rave gives an account 993 Kin
1/4/2020 12:01pm, User spends 1000 Kin to join a rave

How Rave Works
Rave has always worked with their standard of paying out 1 Kin for every minute of video watched. This is still true today with Raves KRE 2.0 update. Rave pays 1 kin per minute and that Kin appears to be paid at the time of exiting the room. Then when the user joins the next Rave & anytime a user has an insufficient balance they are instantly credited an amount to make them reach 1000 Kin and then debited so they are hitting the 1000 milestone in KRE as shown above.
I do not like their approach as it appears they are intentionally gaming the KRE by allowing users to spend Kin they have not earned or bought both of which are fatal to the health of the ecosystem.

Is this a bad thing?
Yes. It fundamentally breaks the system. Imagine playing Monopoly in which you can always buy what the property you land on. The game will eventually break for all participants once its progressed a few rounds. Thats what we are seeing right here, right now. The ecosystem has a limited amount of time before this damage becomes irreversible in my opinion.

Is Rave to blame?
Partially. The Rave team has demonstrated they are amoral with their 1000 Kin spends. However, they do appear to be complying with the existing rules of the KRE. This leads me to my next point.

Blockchains are vulnerable to attacks
MakerDAO is vulnerable to a governance attack (spend $80m in MakerDAO tokens to earn $340m ETH)
Ethereum Classic has been 51% attacked (Spend $100k on Hashrate to earn $1.1m ETC)
Create a bitcoin transaction and get 92 billion Bitcoins back!
We are no different. This attack is not directly attacking the chain through Federation, but more of abusing the existing rules we have in place. To me, Kin is under attack and we need to work together to rewrite the rules of the KRE to make them un-gameable to ensure that present and future developers all have a level playing field.

What can we do?
I just mentioned it above. We need to assist the KF in rewriting the rules of the KRE 1.1 and KRE 2.0 to encompass this issue and any other potential vulnerabilities. We cannot allow these attacks to continue.

Why did I build AmputatorBot?

Why did I build AmputatorBot?

This thread was automatically archived (RIP). Check out the new one here.

Update #3: www.AmputatorBot.com is now live!
Update #2: AmputatorBot is now open source!
Update #1: You can now summon AmputatorBot!

Why AMP is bad for everyone

TL;DR: Google’s AMP is a major threat to the Open Web and your privacy.
AMP means “Accelerated Mobile Pages” and is a framework designed to make websites faster. In many cases, it does exactly that. However, it comes at a high price.
Google's AMP is a major threat to the Open Web. AMP was developed in secret alongside some major news organisations. By the time it was released, Google’s spec and infrastructure were basically settled and non-negotiable. And now Google is prioritizing AMP pages in their search results and they only allow AMP pages to appear on their news carousel. This forces more and more organisations to implement AMP, thereby increasing the power of an already huge and monopolistic company.
And while Google is increasing their control over the internet, you’re losing control over your privacy. Google’s entire business model is about collecting as much personal data as possible. AMP is just another tool to do so. As described in Google’s Support article:
When you use the Google AMP Viewer, Google and the publisher that made the AMP page may each collect data about you.
To protect the Open Web and your privacy, u/AmputatorBot provides the direct link (bypassing Google).

And now, for the nerds among us, some rather technical stuff:

Automatic working subreddits

u/amputatorbot currently works automatically with a select number of subreddits: amputatorbot, audio, chrome, degoogle, economy, europe, europrivacy, firefox, gaming, programming, robotics, security, seo, tech, technology, test, upliftingnews and worldnews.
You can summon the bot almost everywhere else by typing: u/AmputatorBot, more info here.
Hit me up with questions or suggestions and I will try to respond ASAP!

Non-working subreddits

AmputatorBot doesn't work in these subreddits: android, beer, bitcoin, books, conservative, CryptoCurrency, economics, ELI5, flying, Futurology, gadgets, google, history, korea, kitchener, movies, nottheonion, news, PoliticalDiscussion, politics, popheads, todayilearned, truecrimediscussion and worldpolitics for diverse reasons. Summoning the bot will not work there either.

Remove AMP in just one click with www.AmputatorBot.com!
I've made quick and free online version of AmputatorBot over at www.AmputatorBot.com. It's really easy, just paste an AMP URL in the input box, click the button and that's all! See the announcement post here.
A quick demo of www.AmputatorBot.com

Browser extension

The 'Redirect AMP to HTML' extension by Daniel Aleksandersen enables users to choose to opt-out of using Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) and choose to use the standard web instead. In other words, it does the same thing as u/AmputatorBot, but automatically and it works great. 10/10 would recommand!

Changelog

Check out the changelog here. Latest major update: 16/12/2019

Opt-out & opt-back-in

The bot works automatically in the subreddits mentioned above and manually using mentions.
Opt out: If you want to prevent the bot from replying to your comments and submissions, click here to opt out.
Opt back in: Did you opt-out and regret it? Click here to opt back in.

Support the project

AmputatorBot is a really important project for me and I want to spend as much time and resources into accomplishing it's goal: to make people aware of the dark side of AMP and to give people a choice. You can support the project in a couple of ways:

Donate to help me cover some of the costs
If you have some spare change laying around, you could make a small donation to keep the servers running. You can donate via PayPal by clicking on this link: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=EU6ZFKTVT9VH2. It costs €8.26 per month to host the bot 24/7. You can fill in any amount of money, but don't feel obligated to donate much, I'm just trying to cover the costs.

Give feedback and contribute (AmputatorBot is open-source!)
If you have some spare time laying around, please give me feedback! You can:

Summon the bot
Have you spotted an AMP link in a submitted page or comment? Mention u/AmputatorBot in a reply and I'll do my best to share the direct source (just remember that this won't work on the non-working subreddits). More info about this feature can be found here.

Thanks for the tremendous support you've given me and u/AmputatorBot <3

    4. Jonathan Toomim: "At 32 MB, we can handle something like 30% of Venezuela's population using BCH 2x per day. (253 points, 170 comments)
    5. Jonathan Toomim: "BCH will not allow block sizes that are large enough to wreak havoc. We do our capacity engineering before lifting the capacity limits. BCH's limit is 32 MB, which the network can handle. BSV does not share this approach, and raises limits before improving actual capacity." (253 points, 255 comments)

Weekly Update: Parachute Digestive, #UptrenndOC Contest, launch of Defswap, Harmony in India... – 8 Nov - 14 Nov'19
Hiya Parachuters! We are almost there. Just one more update to go after this to get completely upto speed with the latest week. So, here’s your week at Parachute + partners (8 Nov - 14 Nov'19):

Cap published the first Parachute Digestive ever - a biweekly summary of Parachute and ParJar-focused updates. That’s right – 21k users, 512k tips, 20k deposits, 33k withdrawals. Massive! OG Parachuters might have received an email as well. In trivias this week, we had a movie quiz in TTR for 2500 $PAR per Q and another one with a 25k $PAR prize pool. Charlotte’s Math trivia was another fun one with 2500 $PAR in prizes per question. Harry hosted a Netflix and TV show trivia. All your hours spent binging finally came to fruition. Tiproom games has moved to a new channel. This week’s creative contest by Jason involved creating a Christmas-themed promo poster to capture the spirit of Parachute that draws new people in to join. 50k $PAR in store for the winners of #Parichristmas. Yay! LordHades shared the first update of Fantasy Premier League (#FPL) this week. LH is at the top with 696 points followed by NovelCloud with 681 points and Chris (@Loki25) with 672 points.
#Parichristmas entries from A: Alejandro, B: Carlos Alfredo, C: Nat, D: Ali, E: Eva, F: Richi, G: FlareofFlame, H: Emma, I: Marcos, J: Carlos
Jason hosted a writing contest as well: “…write a scary short story, I mean really short. The max amount of words is 20. You need to have a parachute element in it somehow.” 10k $PAR in prizes each for top 3 winners of #donkeysattentionspan. Proud pet owners showed off their awesome pets and shared some of their stories in this week’s #wholesomewed. TTR Dance Contest started this week with prize pool of 15k $PAR for the top 5 winners and another 15k $PAR for participants. Videos would have to be to the rhythm of the TTR theme created by Jose. Super fun! In this week’s update of the Parachute Fantasy Football League (#PFFL), Clinton (8-2), Hang (8-2) and Chris (7-3) are still in top 3 with Chris sliding down to 3rd position. It is a four-way tie for 4th place with Alexis, Nilz, Ken and Andy, all at 6-4. Two-for-Tuesday this week was about bands or song titles named after a place - could be a city, state or country. Gian also unveiled the official logo for Two-for-Tuesday. A masterpiece by Jose:
This is too good, Jose!
aXpire’s article from last week on ResolvBilDigitalShares was published on Hackernoon this week and also got a shoutout from them. Nice! CEO Gary Markham travelled to an AltsMIA event to spread the word on aXpire. He also visited the Blockchain Center in Miami to explore partnership opportunities there. The team will be putting MatchBX on the backburner for the time being and shift all its focus to Resolvr, Bilr, Digital Shares, and PayBX. Click here to read more about the strategy. How can I stop the cycle of mom falling into scams? Please help me.. anyone.

My mom really doesn't like official MD doctors. She found this "DOCTOR" at a health food store that uses a microscope and analyzes blood. Sounds like a major joke because doctors don't even take this approach as far as I'm concerned.

This was the results:
https://i.imgur.com/WCTBziZ.jpg

Here is the "MEDICINE" she is taking:
https://i.imgur.com/6ajoqIj.jpg

Here is the website for the "medicine" http://rainforestremedies.net/para-fungal/

Is it the same thing as this? https://www.reddit.com/skeptic/comments/1tw0cp/can_rskeptic_please_eli5_the_practice_of_live/

She's claiming that her urologist supports this type of tests, but I'm not buying it. She's probably lying to me. She's so worried about bacteria being in her blood and fungus. She has a cyst in her bladder, confirmed by an actual doctor and going in for surgery. I'm worried for her health and it seems like she's always fell for these type of scams, but I can't convince her.

She bought into the Dinar currency exchange scams (There's a website called DinarGuru.com that she follows for news).
She bought into this cryptocurrency exchange group where she paid $2000 and sent in 0.5 bitcoin when it was $4000. She hasn't received the money because they are claiming she will make more if she doesn't pay out until next year. Not even sure if they'll even pay her after asking for the "profits". She doesn't even know what she invested in, when I questioned her... her response is "they use robots".
She's always fell for homeopathic medicine.
She bought this machine that vibrates your whole body for $200, helps you lose weight.
She acts like a doctor and reads sketchy websites that have NO SOURCES.
She watches RUSSIAN youtube videos of RUSSIAN doctors explaining a bunch of bullcrap with no citations or studies.

EVERYTHING SHE BUYS, IT MAKES HER FEEL BETTER FOR A LITTLE BIT THEN NEVER GOES BACK TO IT AND STARTS TO FEEL BAD AGAIN.

And she wonders why she's tight on money.

Do I just show her this reddit thread with your guy's responses? I have a sister, maybe she can help. But she's really busy with her own stuff. It's really stressing me out because she forces stuff onto me. She tries to strip me of my privileges when I say no and argue against her. She wakes me up at 6 AM to feed me random natural herbs or whatever, like I'm some kind of lab rat.

This really affects me because I have ADHD and I can't read/hear something and understand what it's saying. She's trying to prevent me from getting the help I need now because of her bad experiences with doctors. Like she goes for 2-4 appointments and then feels worse, then says doctors are all bad.

Thanks everyone.

Bitcoin Private coin developer secretly pre-mined 2 million extra coins, selling so far 300k of them. Totally undiscovered until now because of the coin's privacy features -- sorry for your loss!

Interesting ongoing drama in the "Bitcoin Private" community, one of the many shitcoin forks that occurred after the Bitcoin Cash fork.

Don't trust, verify: A Bitcoin Private case study

Bitcoin Private (BTCP) [...] was intended to [have] an initial supply of ~20.4m BTCP, with a decaying miner reward, capping the total supply at 21m units as with Bitcoin.
However, 2.04m additional units were covertly minted during the import of the Bitcoin UTXOs and sent to the BTCP shielded pool, bringing the initial supply to 22.6 million, contradicting the whitepaper and all of the materials published by the team. Three hundred thousand units of the covert premine were moved out of the shielded pool towards what appear to be exchanges. Ultimately the lack of uptake of BTCP by the recipients of the airdrop meant that those additional 300k transparent units today represent close to 10% of the BTCP supply in circulation, with 1.80M covertly minted units remaining in the shielded pool.
What this essentially means is that the developers of this coin lied to everyone - CoinMarketCap, their whitepaper readers, etc - and using the fact that their coin has private addresses, kept a cache of 2 million coins secret, 300,000 of which appear to have been sold.
As a reaction to this news, while all other major coins have pumped, Bitcoin Private has dumped 21%.
The developer at the time, Rhett, has denied involvement. As you can see from the Twitter replies, no one believes him. In Trumpain style, he's blocking dissenters rather than presenting convincing proof he didn't defraud "investors".

/r/Bitcoin FAQ - Newcomers please read

Welcome to the /Bitcoin Sticky FAQ

You've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
Some great introductions for new users are My first bitcoin, Bitcoin explained and ELI5 Bitcoin. Also, the following videos are a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:
Also have to give mention to Lopp.net, the Princeton crypto series and James D'Angelo's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard series. Some excellent writing on Bitcoin's value proposition and future can be found at the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute. Bitcoin statistics can be found here, here and here. Developer resources can be found here, here and here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here. Potential upcoming protocol improvements here. Scaling resources here. The number of times Bitcoin was declared dead by the media can be found here (LOL!), and of course Satoshi Nakamoto's whitepaper that started it all! :)
