When you look up someone's Bitcoin address on Blockchain.info, and the landing page for it says "Final Balance" - is that actually the person's current BTC balance right now?

If so, I will be quite shocked...

My understanding of bitcoin addresses any near good? (new to bitcoin and new to reddit, so en-joy yalls...)

(Plan is to edit this down as corrections come in - thanks for any help with getting it right!)
BITCOIN ADDRESS INFO
What is a bitcoin address: - A bitcoin address is a valid sequence of letters and numbers which represents (in a different, shorter form) the public key of a public/private key pair that can be used in bitcoin transactions.
How is it created - private key: - The bitcoin address is created by first generating a very long (256-bit) random number - The random number is the private key (although it will often be recorded in a format that is a little more friendly than a sequence of 256 0’s and 1’s) - If the number is truly random the chances of two people generating the same number are very, very small - The number can be generated in many different ways. It can even be generated manually eg by throwing dice - Oh yeah, and I had better make sure I securely record the private key otherwise things will not go well for me…
How is it created - public key: - The random numbeprivate key is then put through some math to derive the public key - The public key derived from that particular private key can only ever have been derived from that particular private key: they are a key pair. - This means there is no risk of the same public key being derived from a different private key. - The public key is then put through some more math to derive a different, shorter form of the public key (still a long sequence of alphanumeric characters though). - This shorter form of the public key is useful because it has various checkpoints within it to make sure the sequence is valid - There is a very small risk the same shorter form could be derived by more than one public key, but this risk is so mathematically small that it doesn’t need to be worried about… - The valid shorter form can be used as a bitcoin address - (Note: an invalid form could not be used as a bitcoin address as any attempt to use it in a bitcoin transaction would be rejected by the bitcoin protocol.)
Using a bitcoin address: - A valid bitcoin address can be used in a bitcoin transaction and have a numeric value of bitcoin assigned to it. - The bitcoin transaction will be recorded in the public ledger of all bitcoin transactions, the block chain - Once an address has a bitcoin value assigned to it in the block chain, the private key of the public/private key pair can be used to re-assign (up to) that value of bitcoin to another bitcoin address or addresses (or presumably even to the same address?) - The only way to re-assign a bitcoin value from one address to another is by using the private key to initiate (digitally sign) a bitcoin transaction. - This means that if the private key is lost, although the value of bitcoin will always remain associated to that address in the block chain, it will not be possible to initiate a bitcoin transaction to re-assign the value to a different address. It will be as if you had lost the key to a safe with a lock so complex it cannot practically be picked.
SUMMARY: - The bitcoin address is not a digital or physical location where bitcoin is stored, but a representation of the public key of a public/private key pair that can be used in bitcoin transactions. A value of bitcoin can be assigned to the bitcoin address and once assigned the private key can be used to re-assign the value to a different address. The only physical/digital location relevant to bitcoin is the public ledger of all transactions - the block chain - which records and publicises the association of bitcoin value to bitcoin address.
SOME OTHER NOTES:
Bitcoin Address: - Look a bit like this: 1FDd9auc8buJWrMAwWCvRPyswWFuS2hYkH - Always begins with a 1 or 3 - 27 to 34 alphanumeric characters long - Within the address, several characters act as a checksum
Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm: - This is the math algorithm used to take the random numbeprivate key and form the public key - The public key is a pair of coordinates (x,y axes) on the elliptic curve derived from the random number.
Private Key: - Simply (almost) any random 256-bit number - The number can be generated in many different ways, even manually by eg throwing dice. - A ‘bit’ is a value of 0 or 1, so a 256 bit number is a sequence of 256 0’s and 1’s - To make a sequence of 0’s and 1’s more manageable, it can be represented in different ways. For example it can be represented as 64 hexadecimal characters. - Hexadecimal characters are in the range of 0-9 and A-F, with one character representing 4 bits (64 hex characters = 256 bits) - Bitcoin also uses something called a ‘wallet import format’ for the private key. More info about that here
Public Key: - A pair of coordinates (x,y axes) on the elliptic curve derived from the private key. - Both coordinates are 32 bytes = 64 bytes total - Plus one byte is added at the front that always has the same value = 65 bytes total - The 65 byte number is commonly represented in 130 hexadecimal characters - And for bitcoin the 130 hex is commonly then compressed and put through math to arrive at the bitcoin address - It is not possible to take a bitcoin address and work backwards to arrive at the public key. This is because the same bitcoin address can be derived from multiple public keys, although the chance of this happening in practice is very small. - A good diagram of how public keys go through math to become bitcoin addresses here
